Why We Like Fortuna Metals
Fortuna is exploring for natural rutile in Malawi – a mineral the world is struggling to secure. Rutile is the clean, high-grade titanium feedstock that avoids the heavy processing most of today’s supply needs.
Demand for rutile is building from industries that don’t have easy substitutes: planes, cars, medical equipment, and now robotics and automation.
At the same time, rutile supply has been shrinking after decades of under-exploration. Fortuna’s ground sits alongside the discovery that brought global attention to Malawi. With surface mineralisation and low-cost exploration methods, the company has a chance to add new supply into markets where shortages are already visible.
Fortuna is early, funded, and working in a proven geological address, which is the kind of setup we look for.
Why Rutile?
Rutile is the highest-grade titanium feedstock. Unlike most titanium, which comes from low-grade ilmenite that needs carbon-heavy upgrading, rutile can go straight into use. That makes it cheaper, cleaner, and increasingly valuable.
Titanium demand already comes from sectors that can’t swap it out – aerospace, defence, and medical. Robotics and automation are expected to add another layer of demand over the next decade, with no easy substitutes. With rutile supply in decline, new projects that can bring it online are attracting attention.

Fortuna Metals' Mkanda & Kampini Project
Mineralisation here is the same style as Sovereign’s Kasiya discovery: rutile-rich material starting from surface, laterally extensive, and cheap to explore with soils and auger drilling.
The company is funded to run its first programs, with soil sampling and auger drilling underway in late 2025, followed by geophysics and mineralogy work into 2026.
The plan is to step out systematically, with a maiden resource targeted for 2027. In a jurisdiction with sealed roads, hydro power, and rail straight to port, the setup supports fast, cost-effective exploration.
The Key Points of Interest
- Exploring for natural rutile in Malawi
- 658km² landholding directly alongside Sovereign Metals
- Funded with $4.7M in cash
- Early exploration underway with steady news flow expected
- Demand growth driven by aerospace, defence, and robotics
FUN in Summary
Fortuna Metals is early, funded, and operating beside the discovery that made Malawi a new rutile province. With supply tight and demand building, the company is well placed to show what its ground can deliver over the next few years.
